Description

Definition. This chart tracks the day-to-day change in the number of public Lightning Network channels, split into channel openings (green columns) and channel closures (red columns), with the total channel count shown as a line 🟠 and the BTC price (grey) for reference.

Technical. The columns are derived from the daily change in the total channel count:

  • Opened Channels = daily change in channel count, when positive (green)
  • Closed Channels = daily change in channel count, when negative (red)

Note that this is the net daily change: a day on which many channels opened and slightly more closed prints as a net closure.

Interpretation. Channel turnover reflects the pace of Lightning Network topology growth and reorganization. Sustained runs of green columns mark expansion phases in which new routing capacity and connectivity are being added, while clusters of red columns accompany consolidation — often driven by node operators closing inactive or poorly routed channels, or by large routing nodes restructuring. Because the measure is net of openings and closures, quiet readings can mask healthy turnover; the level of the total channel count line provides the cumulative context for whether the network is structurally growing or shrinking.

Notes. Built from Lightning Network Number of Channels. See also Change in Node Count, Mean Channels per Node and Mean Node Capacity.
