Description

Definition. Coinblocks Stored (CBS) are the net volume of coinblocks which are added to the aggregate at each blockheight, shown in green against price (grey) with a zero reference line. A coinblock is the lowest level and fully fungible unit of measurement within the Cointime Economics framework: a UTXO containing 2.1 BTC (coin volume), and with 400 confirmations (lifespan), will have accumulated a cointime of 2.1 x 400 = 840 coinblocks.

Technical. CBS is calculated as the difference between coinblocks created (CBC) and coinblocks destroyed (CBD), smoothed here with a 7-day EMA:

  • Coinblocks Stored = Coinblocks Created - Coinblocks Destroyed

Interpretation. Positive values indicate that coinblock creation outweighs destruction — the supply is, on net, aging and accumulating dormancy, behavior characteristic of HODLing-dominated regimes. Negative values indicate that cointime destruction dominates, meaning older coins are being spent at scale; sustained negative CBS is typical of high-activity phases such as late-stage bull markets and capitulation events. The magnitude of the swings gauges how aggressively the balance between storage and expenditure is shifting.

Notes. Built from Coinblocks Created and Coinblocks Destroyed. See Cumulative Coinblocks for the all-time totals of all three coinblock measures, and Liveliness and Vaultedness for the ratio form. Developed within the Cointime Economics framework for Bitcoin, a joint venture between Glassnode and ARK Invest, with full details available in two formats: an overview primer (Version I published via ARK) and a comprehensive guide for specialists (Version II published via Glassnode).
