Description
Definition. The daily (bars) and cumulative (lines) number of voluntary exits and slashing events taking place within the active validator set. These events can be characterized as follows:
- Voluntary Exit 🔵 where a validator opts to cease participating in consensus, and enters the exit queue. These validators no longer propose or attest to blocks, but the ETH stake cannot yet be withdrawn.
- Slashing 🔴 in the event of malicious behavior, where the protocol forcibly ejects a validator from the pool for misbehavior such as proposing or attesting to invalid blocks, or non-consensus chainsplits.
Technical. The cumulative traces are running sums of the daily event counts: Cumulative Count = cumsum(Daily Count).
Interpretation. The two event types carry very different signals. Slashing is rare and punitive: isolated events reflect individual operator error, while clustered spikes have historically traced back to correlated infrastructure failures or misconfigured redundant setups at large operators — making the red series a monitor of operational health in the validator ecosystem. Voluntary exits track deliberate unstaking demand: waves of exits appear around structural changes (such as withdrawals being enabled), during staking-provider rotations, or when validators de-risk. The slope of each cumulative line summarizes the prevailing regime, with flat stretches indicating a stable, committed validator set.
