Description

Definition. Coin Years Destroyed (blue) is defined as the 365-day rolling sum of Coin Days Destroyed for Ethereum, plotted with price (grey). It shows the amount of coindays that have been destroyed over the past year and is indicative of long-term holder behaviour.

Technical. The trace is a simple rolling aggregation of the daily CDD series:

  • CYD = sum(CDD, 365)

Interpretation. By aggregating a full year of coinday destruction, CYD isolates the slow-moving component of spending behavior: it rises when substantial volumes of aged supply have been spent within the trailing year, and declines when older coins remain dormant. Sustained increases in CYD have historically accompanied macro distribution phases, in which long-held coins are progressively transferred to newer market entrants, while declining CYD reflects consolidation and accumulation regimes dominated by holding. Its yearly window makes it slower but considerably less noisy than the quarterly CDD-90 view.

Notes. This metric was first put forward by ARK Invest. Built from Coin Days Destroyed (CDD). The quarterly counterpart is 90D Coin Days Destroyed (CDD-90).
