Description
Definition. This chart presents the mean BTC-denominated inflow volume — the average deposit size — for the top exchanges, with the aggregate across all exchanges shown as columns and each individual venue as a line, alongside price. This tool can be used to identify and filter for periods and exchanges experiencing larger than normal exchange deposits.
Technical. Each trace is the mean transfer volume per deposit transaction to the given exchange. Exchanges covered are those with the largest BTC reserves:
- All Exchanges (columns)
- Coinbase
- Binance
- Bitfinex
- Gemini
- Kraken
- FTX
Interpretation. Because it is an average per deposit rather than a total, this measure separates the size of deposits from their count: a rising mean inflow indicates larger average deposits, behavior typically associated with whale-scale or institutional movement, while periods dominated by retail activity show many small deposits and a lower mean. Divergence between venues reveals where large depositors are concentrating, and isolated spikes on a single exchange often accompany notable sell-side events or large internal transfers. Note that the FTX series ends with the exchange's collapse in November 2022.
